Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I track a flight?
Enter the IATA flight number (e.g. SQ322) in the search bar. OpenAero fetches live status, departure and arrival times, METAR weather at both airports, and plots the route on an interactive map.
Why is my flight not appearing?
Ensure you are using the IATA code (2 letters, e.g., AA) rather than the ICAO code (3 letters, e.g., AAL). Some charter or cargo flights may not be available in the public database.
Is the data real-time?
We use the Aviationstack API for flight data. While we aim for live updates, please note that there can be a 10–30 minute delay compared to airport flight boards depending on the carrier.
What is a flight number?
A flight number is a unique identifier assigned to each flight by an airline. It typically consists of two letters (the airline code) followed by numbers (the flight route identifier).
What is a METAR report?
METAR is the global standard for aviation weather observation. It encodes wind speed and direction, visibility, cloud cover, temperature, dewpoint, and altimeter setting. Pilots and air traffic controllers use it worldwide.
Is OpenAero free & private?
Yes. OpenAero is open-source and free. Since it is a client-side app, your search history stays in your browser; we don't track your data or require an account.
OpenAero for Windows
